John Wells has more than 25 years experience in turning architectural and furniture elements for homes and commercial spaces.
"A piece of wood comes to me: a gift, a find in the woods near my home, a deserted carcass by the side of the road. I study and consider: what does the giver want, what do I want, what does the tree, the wood offer?
Then the making begins. Chain sawing, rough turning, turn it green or let it dry and finish turn, texture, carve, what does the vessel want? There is literally a moment in each vessel when it says this is the way to proceed and this is enough.
This is the moment when I know I’ve done what is right, pleased the wood and the vessel will please another person. They will feel that rightness, the connection with the wood, the beauty."
